Reminder – Geocaching Aug. 9th

geocaching logoThe last summer pack event will be on Saturday August 9th, starting at 10:00 AM, at the Entrance Pavilion of Fairview Park.  This will be an introduction to Geocaching — scouts along with their parent(s) will be partnered with an experienced local cacher, who will guide them in the skills needed to find the caches.

Bring your own sunscreen and bug repellent, and a water bottle will be helpful.  We will provide drinks and bring a grill — if you want to bring food (for yourself or to share), we will hang around afterwards and have a little picnic.

If you’d like to get a head start, you can visit our Event Cache on Geocaching.com:  http://coord.info/GC57ZDX .   You can follow the instructions on the website to register a team name FOR FREE.  Then explore the site for more information about Geocaching.

If you have a smart phone, and really want to get a jump on things, you may want to load a GPS waypoint program, like “Free GPS” for the iPhone, or “Polaris Navigation GPS” for Android.

Geocaching! August 9th

This summer Pack 843 will be working along with the local geocaching community to help introduce our scouts to the fun of Geocaching.

Cache Find In 2013Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.  And it’s happening right now, all around you. There are 2,435,261 active geocaches and over 6 million geocachers worldwide.

The event will be on Saturday August 9th, starting at 10:00 AM, at the Entrance Pavilion of Fairview Park.  Several temporary caches will be set up, and scouts along with their parent(s) will be partnered with an experienced local cacher, who will guide them in the skills needed to find the caches.

We will be providing some swag (treasure!) for the scouts, which they can then swap for swag inside the hidden caches.

Bring your own sunscreen and bug repellent.
