Pack 843 Pinewood Derby

Pinewood DerbyThe 2017 Pack 843 Pinewood Derby is just around the corner, so it’s time to get started on those cars!  All scouts with their dues paid should have received a Pinewood Derby kit at the last pack meeting.  If you didn’t get yours yet, see you Den Leader at the next meeting (Dec. 7th).  Then before you begin building, be sure to review the Official Pack 843 Pinewood Derby Rules (pdf)

Just like last year, you are required to use official BSA wheels and the supplied axle nails.  Your car cannot exceed 5 ounces, or the dimensions posted in the rules.

Weigh-in for the cars will be held on Saturday, January 21st from 10 AM to Noon at the Zion Lutheran Church.  All cars MUST BE AT THE WEIGH-IN in order to race!  If you are not available at that date and time, please make arrangements with another scout to bring your car to the weigh in.

Races are on Saturday, January 28th at the Zion Lutheran Church.  Times are set by den level:

  • 10:00 AM Tigers (First Grade)
  • 11:30 AM Wolves (Second Grade)
  • 12:30 PM Bears (Third Grade)
  • 1:30 PM Webelo I (Fourth Grade)
  • 2:30 PM Webelo II (Fifth Grade)
  • 3:30 PM Winner Race

Meetings This Week

Wednesday, November 16th will the the next Den Meeting, at the South Fayette Elementary School.  Starting time is set by each den.

DUES — It’s time to pay yearly dues for the Pack rechartering, which takes place in December.  You can get your balance due at the front desk during the den meeting, and you can pay your balance at that time, too.  As a guideline:

  • If you sold no popcorn and worked no show-n-sells, you will owe $100
  • If you sold at least one item, or worked one show-n-sell, your base rate is $80.  Sales values will reduce that amount, so check at the desk.
  • If you sold $350 or more, you’re PAID IN FULL!

Scout TalentThe November Pack Meeting will be this Friday, November 18th in the South Fayette MIDDLE SCHOOL Auditorium.  We start at 7:00, so don’t be late!  This will be our annual pack talent show, so everyone remember to practice your songs or skits on Wednesday!

DUES should be paid at the Pack Meeting if you don’t pay on Wednesday.  All scouts who have paid the dues will receive their Pinewood Derby Car kit at the end of the meeting!

Troop 2 Pancake Breakfast – Sunday

boy-scout-pancake-breakfastThe Boy Scouts of Troop 2 in Bridgeville will be holding their annual Pancake Breakfast this Sunday, November 13th. The event takes place at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Bridgeville, from 8 AM until 1 PM. All you can eat pancakes and sausage! The cost is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors, and $3 for children under 5 or for scouts in uniform.

Tickets will be available at the door.  Help support local Scouting!

You can place an order for additional popcorn (or your original order in case you missed the deadline)—-

You will need to:

2.  Turn in your Money for popcorn sales (check made out to PACK 843) at the den meeting on 11/16 or Pack meeting on 11/18.

You will still earn money towards dues and/or your scout account, BUT your scout will NOT earn any more prizes.

People, Vans, Trucks and Large Vehicles for Popcorn Pickup and Sorting

Due to a GREAT Fundraiser, we are in need of five (5) large vehicles (vans, pickup trucks, trailers, large SUVs) to help us pickup our popcorn  – I need to make sure we have enough vehicles and sorters so please sign-up under sign-up sheets.

Also NEEDSorters (at the Fire Hall) to sort popcorn and prizes by Scout.  We expect to be finished sorting popcorn by noon.

Ten Commandment Hike

2016-ten-commandment-hike-patchA Scout is Reverent! Since 2006, more than 4,500 people have attended the Ten Commandment Hike AND Organ Recital! Make sure that you don’t miss the fun of the 2016 11th Annual Ten Commandment Hike!

This year’s event will be on Friday, November 25, 2016.  It is FREE for the first 500 attendees who register by November 13th .

The Ten Commandment Hike is a unique and exciting way to embrace the concept of religious tolerance, learn local history, and to have fun.  Listen to and learn from clergy who are: Jewish, Anglican, Baptist, Byzantine Catholic, Buddhist, Roman Catholic, Christian Scientists, Hindu, Greek Orthodox, Muslim, and Zoroastrian.  In addition, at each stop along the hike where there is a Pipe Organ, you will also hear classical music.

The Ten Commandment Hike is open to all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, of all faiths and their families – brothers, sisters, aunts/uncles, grandparents, family friends — everyone. You don’t need to be a Scout to attend. The leisurely and stroller friendly walk visits ten religious institutions in the Shadyside and North Oakland sections of Pittsburgh.

Ample FREE parking is available at the Rodef Shalom Synagogue. The Hike will start promptly at 8:45 am at Rodef Shalom Synagogue on the corner of Fifth & Morewood Avenues in the Shadyside section of Pittsburgh.  The hike ends at approximately 4:00 pm.

Scouts and Scouters in Uniform may also visit Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens from 4:30 pm until they close at 9:00 pm the day of the hike at no charge.

Participation in the hike is limited to 500 individuals.  For more information click here.  

 

Haunted Cabin This Thursday

scary-pumpkinPack 843 will visit the Troop 248 Haunted Cabin as a group on Thursday, October 27th.  Meet in front of the cabin (248 Clinton Avenue: Oakdale, PA) at 7:30.  Our special group rate will be $3.00 per person.

Can’t make it that night?  The Haunted Cabin runs October 26, 27, 28, and 29, from 7PM – 9PM.  Help support local scouting!

Den Meeting Wednesday

The next den meetings will be on Wednesday, October 19th at the Elementary School.  Check with your Den Leader if you don’t know the exact time.

On Friday, November 18th we will hold the November Pack Meeting at the Middle School Auditorium at 7:00 PM.  The scouts will be performing skits and songs for our annual Pack 843 Talent Show.  This week all dens should talk about the show and decide what song or skit they would like to perform.  Please let the Cubmaster know what you will be performing.

Hayride Today!

Don’t forget, the Pack 843 Fall Hayride is today, Sunday October 16th.  The event runs from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Boy’s Home Park (near Hogan Field, Boy’s Home Rd. off of Battle Ridge Rd.)   Popcorn orders are due today!  Plan to stay until the end, if you want to see the scouts with $600 in sales throw pies at the Cubmaster.

Seating is always limited, so bring lawn chairs.  Please be prepared for whatever the weather may be and dress accordingly!
